Pear Crumble

We have two huge pear trees in our year. Come late September I have more pears than I know what to do with. This is one of my favorite recipes to use. This recipe is originally an apple crisp recipe, use granny smiths if using apples.

5 cups pears, peeled, cored and sliced
1/2 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 cup water

1 cup quick-cooking oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degree C). Mix the white sugar, 2 teaspoons flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg together. Mix in the sliced pears and place in a 8x8 baking dish. Pour water evenly over all (if using really ripe fruit omit the water).

Combine the oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and melted butter together. Crumble evenly over the pear mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45-60 minutes until the fruit is soft. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
